High blood pressure

< What is high blood pressure? & Why is it harmful? >
Your heart pumping blood through your arteries puts pressure on the artery walls. High blood pressure (hypertension) occurs when blood pressure stays elevated over time. It's defined in an adult as a blood pressure greater than or equal to 130 mm Hg systolic pressure or greater than or equal to 85 mm Hg diastolic pressure. When blood pressure is elevated for an extended period of time, the inner linings of the coronary arteries become damaged. This leaves them susceptible to the buildup of fatty deposits that can narrow or block the arteries and reduce blood flow to the bodyfs organs. When untreated, high blood pressure can lead to heart failure, stroke, kidney damage, and loss of vision from damage to the retina at the back of the eye. Your risk for high blood pressure increases as you age and if you have a family history of heart disease. Other risk factors include: smoking, being overweight, or using excess amounts of salt. Since high blood pressure has no symptoms, it is called a silent killer. It is very important to awake to the real danger of high blood pressure before itfs too late.
